Seven Drunken Nights
22/08/2008
Phill Hopkins will be showing at Greenbelt Festival 22 – 25 August 2008
They hired men with the sharp pitchforks
To pierce him to the heart,
And the loader he served him worse than that,
For he tied him in a cart!
(from John Barleycorn, Trad.)
‘Seven Drunken Nights’ is a new installation made especially for Greenbelt 08. It will consist of a series of drawings, a group of sculptures and ‘Wine & Beer / Oak Bread’ a performance piece.
‘Seven Drunken Nights’ explores the wrestle between Christian faith and the everyday domestic. It grapples with English folk customs and Christian traditions.
Images from the artist’s childhood memories of the West Country and the stark landscape of Yorkshire are brought together in a topography where objects stand alongside each other, uniting ideas but also suggesting a struggle of hierarchy.
