Phill Hopkins has been selected for the final shortlisted artists Neo:Artprize 2013 Exhibition. Showing the new piece ‘100 Factories’ and explains the work in the following statement:

“This work depicts 100 individual factory buildings, floating in space and time. The image of a factory or even an elongated house shape, comes from scenes during TV coverage of the Earthquake and tsunami in Japan during March 2011. The work was made directly. There is a tension between the materials I have used - the water based acrylic and the oil based bitumen, an ordinary ‘art making’ material with an industrial/working medium, one floating upon the other. The work was made very quickly, it evolved from the centre. Each image was made blind to its predecessor. I didn’t look for the long shot of how it was progressing, choosing to simply focus on each part as it came. The cardboard base for each image comes from the packaging of flat-pack furniture. It is raw and porous, blank and bland. The colour is very familiar with unexpected colour variations”
